Where is Satan ... Now

The last heard of Satan as free agent, going to and fro between heaven and earth, is told in the book of Job. This time line however is not agreed by scholar nor theologian, estimated as sometime after Joseph, and before Abraham, and this at best only a guess. Despite this confusion, the New Testament Christian can be assured Satan was cast bound and sealed directly into the Abyss, Satan with one third of the angles in rebellion were defeated, and in defeat cast to earth and immediately secured in grave/Sheol and pit/abyss. This place will be found named NT12 [bottomless pit (or) Deep], NT42 [abyss], NT5421 [Pit], and other names meaning the same. The following will trace from New Testament scripture, validating the fall of Satan from heaven, also immediately after the fall of Satan, beginning salvation and the Kingdom of Christ. Concerning the Old Testament, it validates that the 'upright and righteous' or faithful to God at death went into the grave, their resurrection into God's Paradise a promise yet to come.

Starting then with Satan as free agent, and the beginning of rebellion, a time when Satan had led all the nations of earth astray. This brought about the war in heaven described in
Revelation 12:7-9 "And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down-that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."

Understanding there was one only time of Satan cast from heaven, it is the prophet Isaiah that tells of this fall in
Isaiah 14:12-15 "How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven, I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit." In this verse the grave is 'Sheol', and the pit is the 'Abyss'. Certainly this was also no different for the angels cast from heaven with Satan, described in these verses, Jude 5-6 "And of the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day." and in 2 Peter 2:4-5 "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment..."

Satan and the dark angels are then bound in chains no longer able to lead all nations astray, however the following will show they are permitted spiritual presence on earth, now as the prince of this world having a kingdom of the air, being spiritual realm. At the first advent or coming of Christ beginning His ministry on earth, Satan is described testing the Lord in location clearly spiritual of region. It is noted of this testing Christ first went through a 40-day fasting, symbolic of significant biblical occurrence for testings, however also note it is the Holy Spirit that leads Christ into this symbolic wilderness as desert region, found in Matt 4:1-3
"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. " Here it is obvious Satan is in spiritual form taking Christ to the pinnacle and highest point of a temple, and next a highest mountain, in this last where they spiritually overlook all the kingdoms of the world. In verse-10 Christ having resisted all the temptation of Satan, orders him to leave, and Satan leaves.

About spiritual tempting, Christ gives power and authority over all the dark spirits to His faithful. The New Testament otherwise is full of Satan and his dark spirits (in possession called demons) driven out and seeking new victims to inhabit. Because of the flesh nature of man, demons do find those disobedient, Satan entered Judas, this does not mean he walked into him. Some quote 1 Peter 5:8-9
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith..." No where in this verse does it say Satan is 'bodily' present, these events describe our spiritual war against both powers, principalities, and rulers (of this dark world), and the spiritual forces (Satan and his dark angels) in the kingdom of the air.

Perhaps the most often heard is claim that Satan is not yet in Sheol/abyss, this apparently from reading Revelation chapter-20 very last verses, describing Satan's rule ending and being cast back into the dark region called the burning Lake of Sulfur. If Revelation 20:1-3 is read correctly, Satan in these verses was cast from heaven into Sheol/Abyss for thousands of years (or Latin Millennium). The original Greek reads about a 'Chilioi Etee' translated into English as (plural) "Thousands Years." Next they must forget in Revelation 20:7 telling that the thousands years 'Millennium' now ends, this happening when Satan is released from the abyss as ruler over earth for a short time, and again leading all nations astray. Finally Revelation 20: 8 tells that Satan gathers his Gog and Magog army (more numerous than sand on the seashore) for war. The very last verse of Revelation-20:15 tells of Satan and all wicked (death and hades) cast into the Lake of fire, where destruction called the second death of all wicked is their final judgment.

About the fall of Satan to earth, Christ during His ministry on earth tells those surrounding Him, of having seen Satan fall in
Luke 10:18 He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." About the fall of Satan, Paul also gave assurance of Satan now bound and sealed in the abyss, saying 2 Thessalonians 2:5-8 "Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming."

What is meant by the 'secret power of lawlessness already at work', although Satan is now in the abyss and no longer has power to 'lead all nations astray', Satan and his dark angels in spiritual form are now 'spiritually active', Satan now called liar, deceiver, and murderer. There is no doubt however Satan has been cast from heaven, and although spiritually active, the Lord has given authority over these dark spirits, as described in
Mark 6:6-7 "Calling the twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits." After Satan described cast from heaven as told in Revelations 12:7, the next verses immediately announce that now salvation begins through Messiah Christ, saying Revelation 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down." And about this salvation Paul said 2 Corinthians 6:2 "I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation."

So now we know Satan is bound and sealed in the abyss, and in this state although he cannot lead all nations astray, the New Testament describes Satan and his dark angels spiritually at work in temptation, lies, and deception. This spiritual realm is described in
Ephesians 2:2 "...the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient." These angels at time in possession of an individual, are then called demons, Satan spiritually active is described when Judas is led to betray Christ, told in Luke 22:3 "Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the twelve." Satan in the abyss no longer has the power to lead the saints astray into spiritual death, this assurance we have through Christ, as told in Rom 6:9-11 "For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus."

There is need to warn however of others of whom God mentions, there is the seed of God which is man, and the seed of Satan, that is understood only as the Nephilim created when the angels wed the women of man, and had children by them. These Nephilim having the spirit of the father the dark angel, and the body of the mother. About this sin of Satan in Eden God said Gen 3:13
"And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said,"The serpent deceived me, and I ate." Of the woman, Eve, the mother to be of man, and of the Nephilim God warned Satan, Gen 3:15 "And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

Christ has not left us defenseless in our spiritual war, giving gifts of power and authority, telling His disciple after discovering their authority over dark spirits, Christ said
Luke 10:19-20 "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." Christ instructs that our war is not fought as does the world, nor by weapons of the world, but instead, Eph 6:11-12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Here we are warned of the spiritual enemy describing Satan and his dark angels as 'spiritual forces in the spiritual (or heavenly) realm', however also the seed of Satan as being rulers, authorities, and powers (of) this dark world. About Satan and his servants Christ gives this assurance, James 4:7 "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

And so we came to Revelation chapter twenty, the encapsulation of all covered above. It begins with Satan cast (once only) from heaven to earth,
Revelation 20:1-3 "And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time." Satan will be released one last time, for the last battle of good and evil, however salvation and resurrection are decreed for the remainder of this earth age, described in Revelation 20:4-6 "I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years." Notice I have removed the second "I saw" not found in the original manuscripts, but added by unknown.

A note of interest, the original Greek describes the beginning of the 'first resurrection' as 'Chilioi Etee", this translates into English as (plural) 'Thousands Years'. There is no definition within this verse that translates as 'one', so a more accurate rendition into English would be 'Thousands of Years'. This being my own opinion from researching Greek math theorem of that time, however to continue, these two events (Satan in Abyss and Resurrection of Saints), is described to end when Satan is released from the abyss, told in
Revelation 20:7-10 "When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth-Gog and Magog-to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

This period of Satan to become ruler over the earth is described by Daniel as the 70th Week (7-years) in
Daniel 9:25-27 "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed one, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed one will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him." I would state most strongly, that the words 'of the temple' are not found in the original manuscript of Daniel 9:27, and is part of many false teachings. Consider also, all alters past have been in the very center of the Temple, before the stairs leading up into the most holy of holies, not in a 'wing' edge or border area.

As described in Daniel, Satan's rule over the earth will end in a final war, Christ and the angels are victorious, and in succession the beast, false prophet, last Satan and all wicked are cast in the holding place called the Lake of Burning Sulfur as told in
Revelation 20:9-10 "But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever." However this was not the end described as punishment forever, this final judgment and eternal destruction is described in Revelation 20:11-15 "Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

At this point note that destruction of all wicked does not occur in the 'Burning Lake of Sulfur'. The destruction described as punishment forever is accomplished later, when all wicked in composite called "Death and Hades" are cast into and destroyed within the "Lake of Fire", it is here in the Lake of Fire where all wicked are destroyed in final judgment. It is during yet this earth age within Grave/Sheol/Hell where the wicked are tormented day and night...
Note Satan and all wicked were cast into a 'burning lake of sulfur', where the Beast and False Prophet had been earlier cast alive (not dying) to await Satan.
Revelation 20:1-7 then describes the wicked suffering in Hell within this earth age, before final judgment.
Revelation 20: 15 then tells of a composite of all wicked now called 'Death and Hades', Hades before noted the same as Hell, and it is this Death and Hades that is (last) cast into the LAKE of FIRE, where they are destroyed. This temp 'Lake of Burning Sulfur' apparently where many in error believe it is this time that Satan is (first) cast into the abyss. Reread Rev 20:1-3, instead telling (when) Satan was (first) cast into the grave and pit, before Christ returns for final judgment.

Revelation 14:11 Describes best what remains when destroyed in the Lake fire, saying, "And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever." Smoke is what remains of an entity of creation, remembering God (is) a consuming fire. After this there is (no) more death, tears, or suffering ...

        About the
new creations of the 'New Heavens and New Earth', where also is found the 'New Jerusalem' revealed (or comes down from) from heaven, what we are waiting for is described in Isaiah 65:17-19 "Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more."

About Jerusalem of yet this earth age, the Apostle said,
Hebrew 13:13-14 "Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come." And about this present heaven and earth, the apostle said, 2 Peter 3:13 "But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness." And of this present land of Israel, was said, Hebrew 11:15-16 "If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one."
